Studies have shown that birds fed coarser soybean meal end up with heavier gizzards, better feed efficiency and, in some cases, even improved carcass yield (Amerah et al., 2013; Svihus, 2011).
So what’s “coarse enough?” Too big (>1,200 µm) and young chicks struggle to handle it. Too fine (<400 µm) and you lose the gizzard benefit. In most cases, a median of 600–900 µm seems to strike the right balance (University of Illinois, 2020).
