Farmers urged not to rush into soybean roasting

Dr. Lynn Davis, dairy nutritionist, soybean processor and dairy farm owner with Quality Roasting, tells Brownfield farmers want to know more about growing and processing their own high oleic soybeans, but he says proper processing requires the right amount of heat, experience, and investing in the right equipment…and that’s why he urges farmers not to jump in without doing their homework. “I would look around to see what sort of commercial processors are in their area, so that maybe they can investigate doing something collaboratively with them rather than taking this process on themselves. It’s another task that they’re not necessarily experts at, and it takes a lot of technology and quality control to get that roasting process done properly.”

Davis says there is also a lot of ongoing research into the proper particle size for optimum digestion, and the soybean oil market is factoring into the feasibility for animal feed.
