Our view of sustainability must broaden to better meet the needs and sentiments of consumers and society at large. Still just as important as ever, environmental impacts of food production should be emphasized in a sustainability framework along with animal welfare, food safety, worker safety and retention, and financial viability. When one of these five pillars of sustainability falter, others often follow, underscoring the importance of considering all areas when striving toward sustainable production in animal agriculture.
